The IBM 1746 System Storage DS3500 Express Storage Systems and EXP3500 Express Expansion Units are the newest addition to the IBM System Storage DS3000 series family of entry disk storage systems. The DS3500 delivers affordable, entry-level configurations for small and medium businesses in compact 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosures, with the flexibility to scale in capacity, performance, host interfaces, and functions as your business grows or requirements change.

Model 1746-A2S

The IBM System Storage DS3512 Express Storage System has twelve 3.5-inch SAS drive bays. This model is configured with a single controller, two 6 Gb SAS ports, and 1 GB cache. This model conforms to applicable NEBS level 3 and ETSI documents.

Model 1746-A2D

The IBM System Storage DS3512 Express Storage System has twelve 3.5-inch SAS drive bays. This model is configured with dual controllers, four 6 Gb SAS ports, and 2 GB cache. This model conforms to applicable NEBS level 3 and ETSI documents.

Description

The DS3500 combines next-generation controller technology with a 6 gigabit per second (Gb) SAS interconnect to the disk drives and the latest, high-performance host interface technologies - 6 Gb SAS, 8 Gb Fibre Channel (FC), and 10 Gb iSCSI - to deliver new levels of performance to the DS3000 series. The DS3500 also supports 1 Gb iSCSI. You can intermix FC or iSCSI concurrently with SAS, giving you the flexibility to address your shared storage requirements within a single system.

The DS3500 is available with single or dual controllers, with the option to further enhance the performance of your dual controller system with the Turbo Performance option. You choose the configuration to match your current performance requirements and budget, and IBM offers a way to protect your investment with an upgrade path to later add the options you need.

The DS3500 flexibility and options also extends to the disk drives. The DS3500 is available in two models:

  • The DS3512 Express Storage System holds up to twelve 3.5-inch SAS disk drives
  • The DS3524 Express Storage System holds up to twenty-four 2.5-inch (small form factor) SAS disk drives

The capacity of a DS3500 system can be increased to up to 192 disk drives with the attachment of EXP3500 expansion units, also available in two models:

  • The EXP3512 Express Expansion Unit holds up to twelve 3.5-inch SAS disk drives
  • The EXP3524 Express Expansion Unit holds up to twenty-four 2.5-inch (small form factor) SAS disk drives

All models support dual-port, 6 Gb SAS high-performance, high-capacity nearline, and self-encrypting drives. Disk drives of the same form factor can be intermixed within the appropriate DS3500 or EXP3500 enclosure. You can even intermix EXP3512 and EXP3524 expansion units behind either a DS3512 or DS3524 storage system (ac power models only).

The DS3500 carries on the tradition of DS3000 series data protection features with support for multiple RAID levels (0 1, 3, 5, 6, and 10), storage partitions to manage volume-to-host access, and FlashCopy and Volume Copy to create logical or physical copies of your data.

The DS3500 brings the following new functions into the DS3000 series family:

  • Remote Mirroring for data replication from one DS3500 system to another DS3500 system using either synchronous or asynchronous data transfers over FC communication links
  • Full Disk Encryption (FDE) with local key management and self-encrypting disk drives (SED) for comprehensive data security and protection
  • IBM DS Storage Manager, previously available only on the IBM System Storage DS4000 and IBM System Storage DS5000 products, brings new robustness and functionality while maintaining the ease-of-use and intuitive nature of the DS3000 Storage Manager

New technology delivers new levels of performance

The DS3500 combines next-generation controller technology with the latest, high-performance host interface technologies to deliver new levels of performance to the DS3000 series.

The DS3500 is designed to be equally adept at delivering throughput to bandwidth-intensive applications and I/O operations to transactional applications, such as databases and Microsoft Exchange. This balanced performance, combined with the ability to handle concurrent workloads, makes the DS3500 a great fit for consolidation and virtualization environments.

With the DS3500, you choose the initial system configuration that matches your performance requirements and budget:

  • The DS3500 with a single controller provides an entry solution with low initial investment
  • The DS3500 with dual controllers offers higher performance
  • The DS3500 dual controller with the Turbo Performance option offers the highest level of performance

Furthermore, the ability to later upgrade your DS3500 to dual controllers and Turbo performance options offers a way to protect your initial investment in a DS3500 entry solution.

Latest host interface technologies with intermix flexibility

The DS3500 brings the latest host interface technologies, 6 Gb per second SAS, 8 Gb per second Fibre Channel, and 10 Gb per second iSCSI, to the DS3000 series family. Along with 1 Gb per second iSCSI support and the capability to intermix host interface technologies, the DS3500 is designed to address your shared storage requirements within a single system.

  • Second-generation, 6 Gb SAS builds upon the solid foundation of 3 Gb SAS with performance improvements and reliability enhancements. With direct attachment support and the capability to be shared by multiple host servers, the DS3500 with SAS provides ease-of-use and simplicity at an affordable price.
  • Fibre Channel, a mature and proven technology now available at 8 Gb, is the host interface of choice for high performance environments. The DS3500 with Fibre Channel allows you to exploit the benefits offered by a SAN environment.
  • iSCSI allows you to capitalize your existing IT skills and infrastructure by delivering block-based storage across the IP network. The DS3500 with iSCSI provides an alternative to direct attach SAS or the investment in a storage-only, Fibre Channel infrastructure.

SAS host interface ports are standard on all DS3500 models. You have the option to add more SAS ports or alternatively, you can add FC ports or iSCSI ports into the same DS3500 system with your SAS ports. The following configurations are available:

Tiered storage options with high performance and nearline SAS disk drives

With support for mixed disk drives within a single system, the DS3500 is designed to support your complete range of data storage requirements, from highly-utilized applications to high-capacity, low usage applications.

The DS3500 supports the following dual-port, hot-swappable 6 Gb SAS disk drives:

  • High-performance, enterprise class drives
    • 3.5-inch: 300 GB, 450 GB, and 600 GB 15,000 rpm
    • 2.5-inch: 146 GB 15,000 rpm
    • 2.5-inch: 300 GB and 600 GB 10,000 rpm
  • High-capacity, archival-class nearline drives
    • 3.5-inch: 1 TB and 2 TB 7,200 rpm

All disk drives of the same form factor can be intermixed within the appropriate DS3500 or EXP3500 enclosure. Up to 192 disk drives are supported by a single DS3500 storage system with attachment of EXP3500 expansion units, doubling the scalability available, offered by the other DS3000 products. Additional disk drives and expansion units are designed to be dynamically added with virtually no downtime, helping you to quickly and seamlessly respond to your ever-growing capacity demands.

You can even intermix both EXP3512 and EXP3524 expansion units behind either a DS3512 or DS3524 storage system (ac power models only). This gives you the added flexibility to mix 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch disk drives within a single system to meet your specific needs.

Energy saving implementations for cost savings today and tomorrow

The DS3500 was developed with energy savings features designed to help reduce power consumption and provide a lower overall total cost of ownership:

  • High-efficiency power supplies designed to meet power efficiency standards for reduce power consumption
  • Small form factor (2.5-inch) disk drives which deliver comparable I/O performance when compared to 3.5-inch disk drives, but require less space and consume less power

And the DS3500 controller technology creates performance value by getting the most performance out of the fewest disk drives. This reduces the number of disk drives needed to meet performance and capacity demands, resulting in lower acquisition and operational expenditures.

High availability with new data protection and security options

The DS3500 carries on the DS3000 series legacy of high system and data availability with:

The DS3500 brings the following new data protection and data security options into the DS3000 series family:

  • Remote Mirroring to provide storage system-based data replication from one DS3500 system to another DS3500 system using either synchronous or asynchronous data transfers over Fibre Channel communication links.
  • Full Disk Encryption (FDE) provides local key management and disk drive-level encryption for comprehensive data security and protection. The DS3500 locally manages and protects the self-encrypting drives (SED) by utilizing a single authorization scheme (or lock key) that can be set and applied to all SED drives within a DS3500. The DS Storage Manager maintains and controls the key linkage and communications with the SED drives, secures user-selected logical drive groups, and can even initiate an instant secure erase feature when servicing, decommissioning, or repurposing drives. The DS3500 FDE engine performs encryption without a performance penalty, which allows you to achieve new levels of data security without sacrificing performance. With these encryption services, FDE key management is transparent to day-to-day storage administration, making SED drives as easy to manage as traditional drives.

Intuitive storage management with the IBM DS Storage Manager

The IBM DS Storage Manager provides a powerful, yet easy-to-use and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) for DS3500 administrative activities, including configuration, reconfiguration, expansion, and routine maintenance, as well as performance tuning and management of advanced functions, such as data replication and Full Disk Encryption (FDE) keys. The DS Storage Manager extends the robustness and functionality of storage management previously only available on the DS4000 and DS5000 products to the DS3500, while maintaining the ease-of-use and intuitive nature of the DS3000 Storage Manager. It provides a complete physical view of your DS3500, but with expertise built into the interface and automated policy decisions, you no longer have to contend with low-level activities. With DS Storage Manager, dynamic and other high functionality capabilities are now available for the DS3500 through the GUI functions available only via the Command Line Interface (CLI).

Rich set of data replication functions for business continuity needs

  • FlashCopy creates a capacity-efficient, point-in-time copy of a physical volume for data protection uses, such as file restoration and backup. A FlashCopy volume is the logical equivalent of the physical volume, but is created more quickly than a physical copy and with minimal disruption to applications and production processes. Using copy-on-write technology, FlashCopy volumes preserve data in its original form even as data in the physical (source) volume is changed. FlashCopy volumes appear and function as standard storage volumes, and restoration of a FlashCopy volume is quick and easy.
  • Volume Copy creates a physical copy of a volume. Volume Copy is used with FlashCopy to create a physical copy of your data with minimal disruption to applications and production processes. Upon completion of the Volume Copy process, the new volume can be mapped to any host and functions as a standard volume. Volume Copy can also be used to redistribute data within the DS3500 moving volumes to a different disk drive technology or RAID level.
  • Both FlashCopy and Volume Copy are performed by DS3500 storage system, so no host server resources are used.
  • Remote Mirroring provides storage system-based data replication from one DS3500 system to another DS3500 system over Fibre Channel communications links. Remote Mirroring supports synchronous or asynchronous data transfers, enabling you to choose the replication method that best meets your protection, distance, or performance requirements:
    • Synchronous mirroring is designed to provide continuous mirroring between primary and remote volumes to help ensure absolute synchronization.
    • Asynchronous mirroring queues remote writes to reduce the latency, thus enabling long distance replication while increasing local system performance. Asynchronous mirroring includes a write consistency option designed to ensure that writes to the remote system complete in the same order as the local system.
    • Remote Mirroring also includes features such as dynamic mode switching, suspend and resume with delta resynchronization, read-only and FlashCopy / Volume Copy access to secondary volumes, and cross-mirroring.

DS3500 Host Attachment Cables

Host attachment cables are required to connect DS3500 host ports to server or switch ports. As a convenience, a limited selection of cables can be ordered with the DS3500. Refer to the Features - Chargeable section for feature numbers and part numbers.

In many situations, the required lengths and installation of host attachment cables will be unique to each customer's configuration and facility specifications. IBM Network Integration and Deployment Services, offered by IBM Global Services, can provide assistance for these unique cabling and installation requirements.

SAS: The DS3500 requires a mini SAS 4x cable terminated with an SFF-8088 connector. The following SAS cables can be ordered with your DS3500:

Fibre Channel: The DS3500 requires 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable terminated with an LC Duplex connector. The following fiber optic cables can be ordered with the DS3500:

  • 25 m Fiber cable (LC-LC)

10 Gb iSCSI: The DS3500 requires a 10GBASE-T (twisted pair copper) cable terminated with a 8P8C modular connector (RJ45 compatible connector). The following cable types and cable lengths are supported:

  • Category 7 shielded - Up to 100 meter
  • Category 6A shielded - Up to 100 meter
  • Category 6A unshielded - Up to 55 meter
  • Category 6 shielded - Up to 100 meter
  • Category 6 unshielded - Up to 30 meter

IBM recommends the use of Category 7 or Category 6A cables for highest signal quality and reliability.

These cables must be customer-supplied and is not available for ordering with the DS3500.

1 Gb iSCSI: The DS3500 requires a Category 5 or Category 5E Ethernet cable terminated with an 8P8C modular connector (RJ45 compatible connector). This cable must be customer-supplied and is not available for ordering with the DS3500.

DS3500 Expansion Unit Attachment Cables

Expansion unit cables are required to connect an EXP3500 expansion unit to the DS3500 storage system or another EXP3500 expansion unit. As a convenience, a limited selection of cables can be ordered with your EXP3500. Refer to the Features - Chargeable section for feature numbers and part numbers.
